What the Luminaries Are Saying

W. Frank Peacock IV, MD, FACEP
Vice Chief for Research in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Cleveland, Ohio
From live webcast Improving Your Diagnostic Accuracy for Heart Failure in the Emergency Department broadcasted on December 13, 2005.

“ED has to get it right. It is important early to be accurate.”

“When you have a delay to diagnosis, you have outcome implications that are really quite significant.”

“We have physical limitations in our abilities to detect them (heart sounds), especially in a noisy emergency department environment with patients who are distressed.”

“This [presence of S3 (third heart sound)] strongly helps you make determinations clinically about what you should be doing.”

“We get the S3 when we get our ECG, it is much easier so patients are labeled correctly so they get the right kind of treatment overall.”

Andrew D Michaels, MD, FACEP
University of California, San Francisco
From the Heart.org discussion upon the release of study appearing in the May, 11, 2005 issue of the Journal of American Medical Association in which Dr. Michaels was senior author. JAMA 2005;293:2238-2244. Click here to visit Publications page to learn more.

“What was interesting was that most patients with heart failure did not have a third or fourth heart sound, but if the algorithm (AUDICOR®) did detect an abnormal heart sound it was very specific in identifying that the patient very likely did have heart dysfunction.”

“This is similar to the way we hear and use heart sounds clinically.”

“If you do detect it (third heart sound), you can feel much more confident that patient has heart failure and further treatment is warranted.”

“The presence of an S3 heart sound correlates with elevated filling pressures.”

“Digital detection of an S3 heart sound provides objective actionable data for patients with heart failure.”

“The combination of an S3 heart sound and BNP improves diagnostic accuracy for patients suspected with heart failure.

Robert B Tober, MD, FACEP
Medical Director, Collier County EMS, Naples, FL
From article appearing in Empulse entitled Electronically recorded heart sounds in the prehospital diagnosis of heart failure - The Collier County Experience.

“By coupling AUDICOR® technology with appropriate therapy, we believe we can significantly improve the diagnosis and treatment of patients with ADHF.”

“AUDICOR® enables us to detect the S3 more reliably than is possible with auscultation, leading to more confident decisions and earlier treatment. This can shorten door-to-needle time for treating ADHF from hours to minutes, resulting both in reduced costs and improved patient outcomes.”
