HEARD-IT Trial
HEart failure and Audicor technology for Rapid Diagnosis and Initial Treatment Trial will test the outcome of adding the highly specific AUDICOR® S3 heart sound to the emergency physician’s diagnostic tools in the immediate diagnosis of Acute Heart Failure.
The HEARD-IT protocol asks emergency physicians to determine within 15 minutes of assessing a patient and blinded to AUDICOR data, whether or not the patient has heart failure. After rating their confidence in that initial diagnosis, they will be unblinded to the AUDICOR data. They will again be asked to provide a diagnosis and confidence score (Likert Scale 0-100) based on both their initial findings and the AUDICOR data.
If a patient diagnosed with heart failure is admitted to the hospital, an AUDICOR test will be obtained the first, second, and last day of admission. Additionally, patients will be contacted at 30 and 90 days after discharge to determine how they have been feeling, if they have returned to the ED, or their primary physician, and if so were the visits related to heart failure.
The primary endpoint for the trial is 15-minute diagnostic accuracy of the ED physician with standard tools vs. standard tools plus AUDICOR. Secondary endpoints are to compare AUDICOR S3 data with clinical confidence, changes in treatment course, ED S3 detection (by physician), ED length of stay, rate and length of hospital admissions, and 30 and 90 day re-hospitalization and mortality.
